Omokaroa area

I smile every time I see these signs. Kiwis have a good sense of humour and use it everywhere.

A view along the path around Mt. Maunganui near Tauranga

This bronze sculpture by Frank Szirmay represents Tangaroa, Maori god of the sea whose role it is, or was, to protect the sea.**   Frank Szirmay has portrayed him as a toned warrior in crouched position and grasping a taiaha (a long club fighting staff) as if performing the wero.   The wero is the traditional Maori challenge given during the Powhiri (formal welcoming ceremony) to determine if visitors intentions are friendly.

In the other hand he holds a mere (a club used by Maori warriors for close-quarter fighting).
